My Journey Towards Costa Rican Citizenship<\/h4>\n\n\n

Seven years ago I first set foot on Costa Rican soil. Practically from the first day, I fell so deeply in love with the country that, I knew that I wanted to live here. In my mind I considered packing up and moving here alone but, that was nothing more than a foolish dream. I decided to build my retirement home up near Algonquin Park, one of the most beautiful nature parks in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five years ago I arrived again, this time with my adopted family, for a second visit. The feelings of being home were overwhelming and couldn’t be dismissed. When I arrived back in Canada, I started researching potential areas to live. My requirements were, reasonably temperate weather, proximity to Doctors and Medical Care for both myself and my pets and, local shopping. By late 2019 I had somewhat settled on the Lake Arenal area even though, I had never visited. At that time I also joined the local community Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, Covid struck and locked me in my house alone for 3 months. Pretty much the next year was spent social distancing, masking and avoiding crowded places. Christmas and birthdays at six feet apart outdoors, led me to think perhaps, just maybe, I could do it alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By early 2021 my mind was made up and I began getting my house ready to put on the market. By December my house was sold and on January 5th 2022, I headed for Costa Rica to find a place to live. I purchased a house and nice property and headed back to Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew that one day I would want to be a citizen so I had gathered up all of the paperwork required for residency including, fingerprints, RCMP background check, birth certificate and documentation from the Canadian Pension Plan for proof of ongoing pension payments. Those documents are only valid for 6 months so by the time I got around to filing I needed to start over lol. I did not want to go back to Canada to be re-fingerprinted so my wonderful lawyer, Yalta Aragon, set up an appointment for that at the police department in Upala. Then, with all of the documents up-to-date, Yalta processed everything and set up a meeting in Liberia with immigration for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 21, 2023 Yalta accompanied me to immigration in Liberia to apply for Temporary Residency. Having an expediente number issued allowed me to look online daily to check the progress of my application. On October 5th, 2023, I discovered that my application had moved on to the next desk. Still checking daily (sometimes multiple times a day lol), on January 5th, 2024, I received notification that my application had been approved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point Yalta set up an appointment for January 25th in Ca\u00f1as to apply for my Dimex (residency) card. I went solo for this application and did my best Spanish speaking for the smiling lady at the desk. I received a number that allowed me to check progress and find out when my card would be in the mail system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, February 12th, I received notification that my card had been mailed to the post office in Tilar\u00e1n. Yesterday morning, February 13, I was advised by message that I could pick up my card so, off to the post office I went. To say that I was excited would be a vast understatement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After two years I will have to renew my temporary residency for one more year and, three years from now I will be able to apply for permanent residency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving permanent residency, I will have to wait an additional four years before I can apply for citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
