They say good things come in small packages, and Costa Rica is living proof. This tiny Central American nation, roughly the size of West Virginia, holds a staggering secret: within its borders lies a wealth of life unlike anywhere else on Earth. Despite occupying a mere 0.03% of the world’s landmass, Costa Rica boasts an incredible 5% of the planet’s biodiversity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine this: I can walk through a rainforest teeming with vibrantly colored butterflies \u2013 1,500 unique species flutter through the air here! And that’s not all. Over 12,000 species of moths, those fascinating nocturnal creatures, call Costa Rica home. By comparison, the entire world is home to only 160,000 moth species! But the magic doesn’t stop with fluttering wings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costa Rica is a haven for creatures of all shapes and sizes. Over the past decade alone, 22 new mammal species have been discovered, bringing the total to a staggering 271. That’s an impressive 4% of the world’s total mammal population! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As dusk settles, listen closely and you might hear the soft chirp of a bat. With 117 confirmed bat species, Costa Rica boasts a remarkable 8% of the world’s known bat population. These silent fliers play a vital role in our ecosystem, and their presence is a testament to the health of our environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costa Rica’s biodiversity extends far beyond the rainforests. From the cool, misty cloud forests to the sun-drenched beaches, every corner brims with life. Amphibians thrive here, with over 2% of the world’s amphibian species calling this country home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hummingbirds, those jewels of the avian world, flit from flower to flower in dazzling numbers. With 53 species identified, Costa Rica boasts an impressive 16% of the world’s hummingbird population. Every flash of iridescent feathers is a reminder of the delicate beauty that surrounds us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And let’s not forget the birds! Over 950 avian species soar through Costa Rican skies, representing a remarkable 10% of the world’s total bird population. From majestic toucans to tiny wrens, the symphony of bird song is a constant reminder of the vibrant tapestry of life woven here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reptiles large and small also find a home in Costa Rica. With 225 species slithering, basking, and camouflaging themselves, this tiny country holds a significant portion (almost 2 1\/2%) of the world’s reptile diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
