The National Bird of Costa Rica

The Clay-colored Thrush

In January 1977, the government under Mr. Daniel Oduber Quiros, desigated the Clay-colored Thrush (Turdus grayi) as the national bird of Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica the bird is known as the Yigüirro. It was previously known as the Clay-colored Robin.

From eastern Mexico to northern Colombia, this nondescript thrush is very common and has recently expanded it’s range to include southern Texas.

It’s distinguishing features include it’s brownish colour with lighter breast and slightly streaked throat with reddish eyes and dull yellowish bill.

Why was this rather plain looking bird chosen as the nation’s avian symbol? There are far more beautiful birds in Costa Rica including, but by no means limited to, the Resplendent Quetzal and Scarlet Macaw but, they are both somewhat regional while the Thrush is seen all over the country. It is included in many stories and folklore of the country and it is said that it’s beautiful song heralds the rainy season and the start of the growing season.
